GOP Unity Emerges at National Convention

Just days following the near-death experience of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, his party, the Republican Party, appears to be more in sync than it has been in years.

"We're going to have our disagreements, but we're all in this together," Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) shared with The Epoch Times during an interview at the Republican National Convention (RNC), where there's been a notable reconciliation within the Grand Old Party.

The president's main challengers for the Republican nomination, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, also took the stage on the evening of Day 2, following each other in a show of unity.

Both political figures praised the ex-President Trump, but it was Ms. Haley's clear support that caught attention.

She had earlier nominated him as her candidate and declared he was her choice for the general election. However, on July 16, she delivered her most powerful declaration of backing yet.

"President Trump requested my presence at this convention to advocate for unity," the former ambassador to the United Nations mentioned just before affirming, "I give you my unequivocal support, without any doubt."

"It's not necessary to fully support Trump's views to cast your ballot for him," she mentioned.

On the same day, Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also appeared on stage. Both individuals were defeated by former President Trump in the 2016 primaries, and Mr. Rubio was defeated by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) in the latter phases of the selection process for former President Trump's chosen running mate.

In a separate development, another candidate for vice-president, North Dakota's Governor Doug Burgum, highlighted the importance of unity in his remarks to journalists as he strolled through the Fiserv Forum on July 16, mentioning that the previous president had hinted at the possibility of a Cabinet position without providing further details.

The discussion on unity surfaces as the end of a legislative term is characterized by division among some Republicans who maintain a slim majority in the House.

This was evident when former Speaker of the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), was removed from his position. His replacement, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), has had to deal with a caucus frequently marked by tension.

"Suddenly, there's a sense of cooperation. We're in harmony within our party, and we're making progress," Mr. McCormick stated.

President Trump's selection was announced several months after the most recent primary contest. However, throughout the year 2023, candidates like Governor DeSantis, Ms. Haley, Governor Burgum, and a range of others worked hard to distinguish themselves from the outgoing president.

At the same time, following years of a relatively cohesive stance against the Republicans who were led by Trump, Democrats are beginning to split over the issue of whether to support President Biden's bid for re-election.

More and more members of Congress and key figures within the party are urging the 82-year-old leader to step down from the race. On July 17, Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) became one of them.

However, a significant portion of Democrats have remained loyal to their president.

While the RNC showcased an image of unity among Republicans, the selection of speakers was not universally applauded by all conservative pundits, including the appearance of model and rapper Amber Rose on July 15.

Amber Rose, who had previously been a vocal critic of former President Trump, shared her transformation in views regarding the MAGA movement.

She explained, "I came to understand that Donald Trump and his followers are not concerned about your race, sexual orientation, or gender. They believe in unity and love. That's when it all made sense to me. These are my people, and this is where I feel at home," she expressed.

On the same day, RNC Chairwoman Lara Trump, the spouse of the former president, echoed these sentiments, stating that "even Democrats" can find a place within the Republican Party under former President Trump.
